Dogwood Chapter #991

In God We Trust

VETERANS DAY POEM

Written by Al Ayo, Sr. - 11/11/11

It was “Veteran’s Day” and on the T.V.

News of “Wars”, was all you could see

My grandson came to sit on my knee

Grandpa, You are a “Veteran”, Grandma told me

Tell me about your time in war

Did you have to travel far?

How did you get that “Silver Star”?

Were you a “Hero” in the war?

Now just hold on with all the chatter

Your grandma, she just likes to flatter

I’m getting old and a little fatter

What I did really doesn’t matter

But I will tell you this my son

To fight in war sure ain’t no fun

And every soldier that carried a gun

Is a “Hero” today, to some one

About the “Silver Star” you mentioned

Understand I had no intention

Of earning one, or a pension

I followed orders, (with a little extension)

About Hero’s, I’m sure you’ll agree

True Hero”s by hundreds you will to see

At Veteran’s Hospital, when you go with me

To replace my wheelchair they gave for free

Remember Son, every Veteran you meet

Is the reason the enemy could not defeat

So be grateful to them when you greet

“Thank you Soldier”

Your Service has made “Freedom Complete”
